Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Vortex Shedding on Boundary Layer Unsteadiness

چکیده
The interaction between an initially laminar boundary layer developed spatially on a flat plate under the influence of vortex shedding induced from a rotating circular cylinder has been simulated numerically. The rotational speed of the cylinder is varied to generate the vortex shedding of different intensities. Also the flat plate is kept at different positions from the cylinder. Due to asymmetry in the flow field, the present problem is governed by unsteady Navier-Stokes equations which are simulated numerically by finite element method. Computations are carried out for low Reynolds number range up to 1000. Instantaneous development of the flow field, unsteady boundary layer integral parameters, and wall skin friction are presented on different streamwise locations over the plate. From the computation, it is observed that the vortex shedding substantially affects the boundary layer development. The disturbed displacement and momentum thicknesses of the plate increase up to 1.6 times and 2.6 times of the undisturbed flow, respectively. Also the plate shape factor approaches a value of 1.5 which is typical for turbulent flow. This interaction strongly depends on the rotating speed of the cylinder, the relative positions of the cylinder and the plate and also on Reynolds number of the flow.

Effect of Square Rod Aspect Ratio on Vortex Shedding Downstream the Rod and Heat Transfer Enhancement from the Neighboring Flat Plate
A rectangular rod is placed in a flow field flowing parallel to a flat plate. Effect of chord-thickness ratio of rectangular rod on developing vortex shedding downstream to the rod is studied. Then, for each one of the aspect ratios, the distance of the rod from the neighboring flat plate is reduced until the rod sticks to the flat plate. In each case, the effect of the flat plate boundary laye...

Recently, increase in the cost of fossil fuels and taking into consideration the environmental effects of exploiting them, caused many researchers and governments to find some ways to make use of renewable energies more cost-effectively. Solar energy is a category of renewable energies which could be harvested via several technologies. One of the most practical methods is using parabolic trough...
متن کاملEffects Of Frequency Variation At Inlet Flow On The Vortex Shedding Frequency Behind A Circular Cylinder
In many applications the flow that past bluff bodies has frequency nature (oscillated) and it is not uniform. This kind of flow has effects on the formation of vortex shedding behind bluff bodies. In this paper the flow around a circular cylinder was numerically simulated. The effects of frequency variation at inlet flow on the vortex shedding frequency were investigated. The transient Two-Dime...
متن کاملStall Vortex Shedding over a Compressor Cascade (RESEARCH NOTE)
The unstable flow with rotating-stall-like (RS) effects in a rotor-cascade of an axial compressor was numerically investigated. The RS was captured with the reduction in mass flow rate and increasing of exit static pressure with respect to design operating condition of the single rotor. The oscillatory velocity traces during the stall propagation showed that the RS vortices repeat periodically,...
